Komplek Parangtritis sejak dulu sudah terkenal, tidak saja sebagai tempat rekreasi pantai yang memiliki hamparan pasir luas, tetapi juga terkenal sebagai tempat yang memiliki berbagai peninggalan sejarah. Komplek Parangtritis terdiri dari Pantai Parangtritis, Parangkusumo dan dataran tinggi Gembirowati.

Konon asal mula Parangtritis di ambil dari keadaan alam yang terdiri dari batu-batu karang dimana dari atas salah satu tempat di tebing pegunungan yang terdiri dari batuan kapur, yang selalu meneteskan air kebawah, menyerupai tritis. Karena air tersebut mengandung zat kapur , maka batu-batu karang makin bertambahn besar . Terbentuklah kolam dengan air yang sangat jernih, yang saat ini telah dibangun sebuah kolam renang yang cukup bagus.

Kolam ini diketemukan dan dipelihara oleh Sultan Hamengku Buwono VII. Di kompleks ini juga terdapat beberapa obyek lain yang menarik untuk dilihat. Kompleks wisata ini dapat dicapai melalui dua jalur. Jalur pertama lewat jembatan Kretek, yang kedua lewat Imogiri dan Siluk
